As was the title of a movie recently...

Aftershocks - A Misinterpretation (03-28-2005)
note: this was originally written March 28, 2005. I re-edited it on June 8, 2008.
I was once watching CNN's coverage of the March 28, 2005 Indian Ocean earthquake...and I cringed every time they mentioned that it was an aftershock of the Dec 26, 2004 earthquake. The concept of "aftershocks" is one of the great modern inaccuracies of geology. And it bothers me to no end that geologists continue to not clear this matter up.
An Argument for Socialism (08-02-2008)
Sean Hannity has me going crazy about socialism. Due to the fact that he obviously won't be turned from his anti-socialism ways, I'm gonna turn you, faithful reader, into a socialist! And I'm gonna use simple logic and facts to do it.
We will start at the beginning. Socialism is not as in Not as in NOT Communism. Communism is a rampant misuse of Socialism. It is a distorted, twisted, unruly version of it in which the Government takes almost everything from the citizens, and gives them the bare minimum back. In the end, the country's population is left to live in a state of squalor, while the Gov't live the high life on what they have collected.
Big Science? (04-20-2008)
No Intelligence Allowed
Ok...I give up. I've heard of Big Oil and Big Brother. But now we have Big Science?? I give the fuck up! What's next? Big Housekeeping and their desires to hide the chemical contents of the cleaners being used?
Boeing Machinists Union (09-06-2008)
Let me start with a portion of an AP article...
"U.S. companies have cut more than 550,000 jobs so far in 2008..."
Breakdown of Religions (11-28-2008)
3 times this week on conservative talk radio I've heard that 75% of the country is Christian.
Each time I heard that stat, I imagined that it included Christians, Catholics, Baptists, Jews, Agnostics, the dead, the undead, the brain dead, the unborn, etc..
Censorship (02-17-2007)
I was listening to the radio on Friday and heard the radio personality use the "f" word. Indeed he said "What the F is going on here?". Now this form of self-censorship drives me up the wall. "F", "freak", "fudge" are all considered 'proper alternatives' to the word fuck and none of them will get you into trouble with the FCC.
The only problem that I have with all of this softening of a "really, really bad word" is that when you hear "F", "freak", "fudge", or the like, what you hear in your head is simply and plainly "fuck".
Conservatism (11-29-2008)
I need someone to set me straight. Please.
I'm not a conservative. Boy, am I ever far from it. My view of conservatism is this: it is the practice of HATING change, progress, and differences.
Letters to Bill O'Reilly - the gay marriage debate (12-29-2008)
I am sick and tired of hearing Bill O'Reilly throw out these common conservative arguments against gay marriage. Don't get me wrong, I respect Bill for trying to be fair and balanced (at least a hell of a lot more than Hannity is). But sometimes he is just plain wrong. And I tried to point out the logical flaws in his arguments. I doubt he will even consider what I said. But oh well, that's one thing I can't control.
Bill you can't be further off when you talk about having to appease all groups when it comes to gay marriage. You tow the conservative line of: if gays are given the right to marry, then the same has to be done for polygamists, for people who want to marry their pet, for people who want to marry their children, etc..
Letters to Glenn Beck 1 - Bob Barr Has 1 More Vote (08-28-2008)
In August I started listening to Glenn Beck's radio program religiously. I also started watching his nightly TV show as often as I could. I found him to be refreshing and new. Someone who sees beyond the Republican-Democrat boundary. So I started to email him. Unfortunately, I never got a response. However, the emails, in my view, are quite good at showing my beliefs and the manner in which I look at the world. So I decided to share them here.
Sadly, as the Presidential race got close to it's end, Glenn showed his utter and total dislike of socialism. Anyone will agree that socialism has failed everywhere it has been implemented. But let's see where those places are: the USSR (Stalin), Venezuela (Chavez), and France. Wow, talking about beakons of hope and prosperity. It's like saying that a city has no good places to eat, and using only 1-star restaurants as your reference.
Letters to Glenn Beck 2 - Boeing union workers (09-04-2008)
Glen,
I'm sorry to interrupt your Sarah Palin love affair (which was hilarious to listen to during your radio show today), but there is a non-election issue that really needs to be discussed.
Letters to Glenn Beck 3 - a golden parachute (09-22-2008)
Glenn,
After listening to your tv show tonight and having the socks scared off of me, I got to wondering about something one of your panel members said. It went something along the lines of "you will destroy the US currency if you go through with this bailout". I happen to agree with him. A country can't just print a trillion dollars without a massive effect on its overall value.
Letters to Glenn Beck 4 - McCain and the bailout (10-02-2008)
Glenn,
please be honest with me, how can you sit there and proclaim that you will vote for McCain after his voting for the bailout bill?
Letters to Glenn Beck 5 - the coming storm (10-10-2008)
Glenn,
3 points and I'll leave you be for this week.
Letters to Glenn Beck 6 - things have changed indeed (10-20-2008)
Glenn,
In response to something you said on the radio today: yes things have changed and that is why so many people are open to socialism now.
Letters to Glenn Beck 7 - no good deed goes unpunished (11-11-2008)
Glenn,
It was quite nice hearing you railing against unions on your radio program. I've been screaming that unions are a hideous form of socialism for quite a long time. Honestly, I almost want the Big 3 automakers to fail simply to see the contracts they have with the unions go away. The assets would get sold to new ownership, who would have the ability to write up a new, fairer contract with the UAW. But, of course, the Government would never let them fail. Short term hurt is utterly vilified these days. How we will all suffer long term because of it.
Letters to Glenn Beck 8 - socialism (11-19-2008)
This is my last email to Glenn. And I plan on it staying that way. Anyone who doesn't want to hear a different view is a waste of my time. I know socialism isn't the most popular of things. But anytime you have to make a choice between food and gas for the car...or food and your mortgage payment in the most prosperous nation on the planet..well there is simply something fundamentally wrong.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll notice that my tone is much darker and direct, as compared to the previous emails. This is my signing off statement, and I wanted to make it as powerful as possible. Oh well, people like Glenn Beck are great, inspiring, even hillarious. But at their core, they are capitalists and conservatives. And they don't give a flying fuck if you are wallowing in the mire just as long as they can live the high-life.
OPEC Oil Production Cut (12-19-2008)
Anyone remember when gas prices were over $4 a gallon nation wide and oil was well over $125 a barrel? Yeah, those days sucked.
In response to this price gouging President Bush, in one of his very few moments of clarity, earlier this year asked the leaders of OPEC to raise it's production in order to bring down the price of oil...and thus the price of gas.
Prop 8 (11-15-2008)
Sadly...we seem to be a nation of people who always have to hate someone.
Whether it was blacks...
The Pope (12-10-2008)
My favorite part of the selection of a new Pope after the unfortunate death of the previous Pope is...
...when God comes down from Heaven and scours the Earth looking for the most honorable, most dedicated, most religiously knowledgeable person to be His emissary...His voice...His representative...His protector of His beliefs and laws.
The Pope Part 2 (12-25-2008)
From an AP article I read today:
"Pope Benedict XVI urged a world confronting a financial crisis, conflict, and increasing poverty not to lose hope at Christmas, but to join in "authentic solidarity" to prevent global ruin."
The Price of Gas (06-09-2008)
Ok, I'm about done with gas prices. We are at $3.89 here in Missouri...and that is fairly cheap compared to elsewhere in the country. So lets have a nice discussion of why gas is this high.
First of all, yes China and India are becoming gas hogs. But even OPEC has admitted that demand is huge...but supply is MEETING it! Yes, back when China and India were more interested in farming dirt than in becoming modernized, there was a glut of oil on the market, which meant lower prices at the pump for the US consumer. So it makes sense for prices to go up as those 2 HUGE consumers came into play. But you are talking about a four-fold increase in gas in 8 years. And that can't all be explained away by the opening and modernizing of two countries.
Trickle Up Economics (12-22-2008)
About a month back, in response to the socialistic agenda of Obama, Glenn Beck was ranting that he had never heard of "trickle up" economics and had no clue how it would even work. Beck, along with Hannity, are in line with the model of Ronald Reagan's "Trickle Down Economics" where money flows from the rich to the poor.
Supporters of this economic philosophy point to how the rich create jobs and opportunities for everyone else. Indeed that is true. However, the rich stay rich by doing something very simple: they do not spend a very large percentage of their money.
Unions - A Form of Socialism (06-04-2008)
I came to a rather strange realization today: unions are institutions of socialism. They take money from the rich (the owners of whatever business or industry the union is associated with) and give it to the union workers. If that isn't socialism, then it must be pretty darn close.
I mean, please correct me if I'm wrong. I've never been a part of a union so I'm not familiar with the inner works of one. Personally, I don't see the use of unions in today's world. In my view, all they do is unnecessarily drive up the price of goods and services...while driving down efficiency and opportunity.
