Letters to Glenn Beck 6 - things have changed indeed (10-20-2008)

Glenn,

In response to something you said on the radio today: yes things have changed and that is why so many people are open to socialism now.

I'm a socialist as I've mentioned before. I make no doubt of it. However, I do not want to take people's hard earned money and give it to those lazy schmucks who don't work and (as Ted Nugent put it) "cry poverty with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other". So I guess I'm not a full-fledged socialist. I prefer to say that I'm a 'different' type of socialist because I do believe in a better wealth distribution.

Anyway, I'm getting off the point I'm trying to make. Glenn, this isn't 1980 anymore and it seems a lot of conservatives want to view today through those 1980-colored-glasses.

Did you read what Pepsi did last week? (stay with me) Pepsi laid off 3,300 workers because they "missed their profit target". There was once a time when as long as your company made a profit, the company was doing pretty damn good and it meant that it would share that profit with it's employees. Now it's not about making a profit, it's "HOW MUCH of a profit did you make?"

It should make you literally want to puke knowing a company that Made A Profit laid off three thousand workers because it didn't meet it's profit margin expectations! (I know you are one of the few people today who knows the difference between earnings and profits, so I don't have to go into that) But come on Glenn, 3,300 people looking for jobs because the company is more worried about providing it's investors with money than it's own employees!! Now these employees are getting shafted so the company doesn't hurt it's precious Profit Margin. Furthermore, I would love to know how many of the 600,000+ people who lost their jobs this year were fired because their company didn't meet profit expectations. Instead of investigating Obama's stupid associations, take a look into that!

So it comes as no surprise that people want socialism. It isn't about employees getting their piece of the pie. It Is About Employees Getting Their Piece Of The Pie BACK!! They don't want to see investors gain off their hard labor. They don't want to see the numerous (and unnecessary) upper management get huge raises while they are told to deal with the menial raise they get...IF they get one.

This country used to be ruled the a market...the Free Market.

Now this country is ruled by a market...the Stock Market.

...

There was once a time when you could be hired right out of high school.

Now you need certifications and degrees. Oh I'm sorry. You need the right certs and degrees. And you better pray that you get some work experience along the way to earning them or else you won't get the job due to a lack of it.

...

There was a time when if you showed you can work hard that you would get a job and get ahead.

Now some jerk in HR that doesn't know you except for a piece of paper (your resume) decides if you are qualified for the job. Oh I'm sorry, they call it "being a good fit for the job".

...

There was a time when working harder than the person next to you got you noticed.

Now everyone, no matter how incompetent, is treated and paid more-or-less equally. And those screw ups that you are constantly cleaning up after never get fired for some strange reason.

...

It wasn't always this way. You know this Glenn. Indeed, 1980 was a great time to be a worker. I saw it with my own parents. But considering all of this and so much more, how do you blame anyone for wanting a "fairer" share?? [btw, I hate how much that sounds like what Biden says]

Things have changed indeed. And not for the better.

Let me end by saying this. Yes I'm a socialist. But I do NOT want a hand out. I will work my ass off for what I get. I DO work my ass off. I'm probably the hardest working socialist you'll ever know. If I don't come home sweaty and looking like I swam through mud, then I don't feel as though I worked that day. But it doesn't show up in my paycheck! I've gotten 2...count them...1...2! promotions in the last year. And have received a whopping $3,000 between them. There was once a time when a promotion meant 'big bucks' (as my dad would say). Now it's the least the company can give you without affecting it's profit margin, as I mentioned previously. I'll work as hard as I need to. But for the love of Pete, pay me a proper, fair wage for my efforts!!

And now that is becoming the cry of the masses, not just us moronic, lunatic socialists.
