Letters to Glenn Beck 7 - no good deed goes unpunished (11-11-2008)
Glenn,
It was quite nice hearing you railing against unions on your radio program. I've been screaming that unions are a hideous form of socialism for quite a long time. Honestly, I almost want the Big 3 automakers to fail simply to see the contracts they have with the unions go away. The assets would get sold to new ownership, who would have the ability to write up a new, fairer contract with the UAW. But, of course, the Government would never let them fail. Short term hurt is utterly vilified these days. How we will all suffer long term because of it.
Anyway, to commemorate your book being released, if you will let me, I have my own little story to share...
On Monday of this week we had the coldest day of the season so far. I took into work 3 winter jackets that my daughter has out grown and planned on simply giving them away. Sure I could have gone to Goodwill or a church or some other similar institution. But I wanted to try to help out my fellow co-workers first. I figured 3 kids would be nice and warm this winter and 3 parents wouldn't need to buy winter jackets as well.
I sent out a mass email with the hook "for the low, low price of FREE". In 2 hours all 3 jackets were taken by very grateful people.
I was getting replies that it was a kind, generous deed and was getting thanked left and right.
I also got a visit from my department manager. It seems HR (Human Resources) called her to say that I had improperly used company resources and to make sure I didn't do it again.
I didn't ask for a dime. I wouldn't have even accepted a dime if offered one! I didn't do this for accolades or thanks. I'm not like that. I was honestly, truthfully just trying to help some people out. And mother fudging Human Resources goes all ape-crap because a worker dared to use the company email to try and help others.
It would be different if I was using the company email to try and sell my daughter's girl scout cookies or, heck, even trying to sell those 3 winter jackets. Instead I was using it to simply give items away that people need For FREE.
Glenn, I guess what I'm trying to say is this: we live in a pathetic, sad age. An age where instead of being patted on the back for a decent, selfless act, you are instructed by Human Resources to not mis-use company resources. We aren't September 12th people anymore, as you would say. I remember September 12...and the month afterwards where we came together as a country and were polite and courteous and helpful to each other. And then it wore off. Slowly at first. Quicker then with time Now here we are 7 years later and are back to September 10th people. Why be helpful when it gets you in trouble? Why be kind and generous when there is nothing in it for you? Afterall, if Human Resources finds issue with it, then shouldn't we all??
(btw, in a heart beat I would do it all again, even with knowing the consequences. Human Resources can control if I have a job. But they can't control the kind of person I am!)
