Conservatism (11-29-2008)
I need someone to set me straight. Please.
I'm not a conservative. Boy, am I ever far from it. My view of conservatism is this: it is the practice of HATING change, progress, and differences.
As society and our civilization moves along, it is the conservatives who are trying to hold back the tide...trying to keep things forever the same...no matter how much damage they do or who gets hurt.
Just look at the gay rights issue. No one is forcing conservatives to live a gay lifestyle. All conservatives have to do is accept and understand that gays live in a manner that is different. But conservatives act as if giving gays equal rights would bring about the end of civilization. So much for that "all men are created equal" portion of the Declaration of Independence.
Anyway, it seems to me that if conservatives had their way, gays will never have equal rights as straight people. Lets go one step further. If conservatives had their way, women would still not have the right to vote, blacks would still be slaves, and the job of fully exterminating the native americans would have been completed by the early 20th century.
Why do I say all of this? Well its because of the argument conservatives use in the gay marriage debate: if we give the right to marry for gays, we have to give it to everyone! Including people who want to marry multiple partners, people who want to marry their pets, and people who want to marry themselves. (seriously, this is the argument presented).
So using that logic, if we give women the right to vote, well what about the people who want to vote twice? What of the people who want to vote a dozen times?? We have to let them do so. And what about 6 year olds?? We have to give them the right to vote as well!
And if we free the blacks from slavery, we also have to free all the pets from their slavery! With no oxen to pull plows, how can crops be grown? Without dogs in a house, who will provide companionship and protection? Without cows and chickens, where will our food come from?
And the native americans, well those evil, heathen, satanists who don't believe in Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ need to be wiped off the face of the planet. If we let them live in peace, then anyone will be able to practice any religion...even ones that believe that the Earth has it's own spirit!
So, in my view, change and progress and acceptance of differences and other beliefs and ways of living doesn't exactly seem to be a cornerstone of conservatism.
Please let me know if I'm off on this one. I'm willing to listen to reason. I try to see both sides. Just present a logical explanation and I'll be willing to weigh it against what I've seen and heard. Hey, it's more than conservatives bring to a debate.
