Breakdown of Religions (11-28-2008)
3 times this week on conservative talk radio I've heard that 75% of the country is Christian.
Each time I heard that stat, I imagined that it included Christians, Catholics, Baptists, Jews, Agnostics, the dead, the undead, the brain dead, the unborn, etc..
I was surprisingly close with that assumption...
Indeed, approximately 75% of the country is "Christian". And yes, those quotes are downright necessary to make that statement even close to being true.
Here's how they get at 75% "Christian":
- 24% Catholic
- 19% Baptist
- 7% Methodist
- 5% Non-specified Christian
- 5% Lutheran
- 3% Presbyterian
- 2% Penecostal
- 2% Episcopalian
- 1.5% Morman
- 1.5% Numerous Churches of Christ
- 1% Jehovah's Witnesses
- 5% Other "Christian"
I do not know a single Baptist who would put themselves in the same category as a Catholic (especially since I was married to a Southern Baptist).
I don't know a single non-Mormon who would even consider putting themselves in the same category as a true Mormon.
So yeah, I guess the country is 75% "Christian"...as long as you can get Catholics to agree to letting Mormons have more than one wife and also get those Catholics to let Baptists actual enjoy their Sunday services.
Funny how the 2% of this country that is Jewish isn't included in that 75%. I mean, really, there isn't that big of a difference between Judaism and Catholism. But oh well, sometimes it's good to be left out of things.
Also funny is that 15% of the country defines themselves as having "No Religion" (Atheists, Agnostics, etc.). If you just go by individual categories, that would rank as the third highest percentage block in the country (only behind Catholics and Baptists/Protestants).
Perhaps...just a thought here...but perhaps if people realized that they aren't the Majority Religion in the country, they might be a little more receptive of the religions of others.
As I said, it's just a thought.
