Unions - A Form of Socialism (06-04-2008)

I came to a rather strange realization today: unions are institutions of socialism. They take money from the rich (the owners of whatever business or industry the union is associated with) and give it to the union workers. If that isn't socialism, then it must be pretty darn close.

I mean, please correct me if I'm wrong. I've never been a part of a union so I'm not familiar with the inner works of one. Personally, I don't see the use of unions in today's world. In my view, all they do is unnecessarily drive up the price of goods and services...while driving down efficiency and opportunity.

A union shop isn't based on capitalism. Capitalism, in all it's naked glory, is about providing the best goods and services at the most reasonable prices and highest efficiency. Workers can be seen in a similar light. The best workers will get the highest pay, most recognition, and faster promotion. Obviously, all workers should have the same BASICS, such as health coverage. But past that, it should be 'every worker for themself'. Unions cut at the heart of that principle though. It becomes "all of us against the ownership". Once again, if that isn't socialism, then I'm just lost. The concept/premise reminds me of the old Soviet posters you'd see from the 40's and 50's about workers uniting and taking a fair share of what is theirs. Honesty, I'd just put a Hammer and Sickle in the logo of all unions. It's rather appropriate I'd say.
