An Argument for Socialism (08-02-2008)
Sean Hannity has me going crazy about socialism. Due to the fact that he obviously won't be turned from his anti-socialism ways, I'm gonna turn you, faithful reader, into a socialist! And I'm gonna use simple logic and facts to do it.
We will start at the beginning. Socialism is not as in Not as in NOT Communism. Communism is a rampant misuse of Socialism. It is a distorted, twisted, unruly version of it in which the Government takes almost everything from the citizens, and gives them the bare minimum back. In the end, the country's population is left to live in a state of squalor, while the Gov't live the high life on what they have collected.
Socialism is a sharing of a country's assets and wealth. In it's purest form, it would be an equal sharing. But in the light of the fact that reality is far, FAR from perfect, there is an unequal apportioning of wealth and land. Hey, it happens. But at least you won't get the kind of financial divide we currently have with certain people holding b...bbb...billions of dollars while millions barely scrape by.
So why? Why do this? Why bother giving hard earned money to the poor, the less fortunate, the unlucky?
Well beyond "it's the right thing to do", there are economic factors to consider. Spreading wealth around means that wealth is being used to enervate the economy. Instead of sitting in someone's bank account, money is spread to people who will actually use it!
Ok...but still don't buy into it? Don't see how it's practical? Sean Hannity still got a hold of you and is whispering in your ear how it's not fair to punish people for being successful??
Fine. We'll start at the top... Bill Gates. 59 b..bbb...billion dollars of wealth. Now I know that a large chunk of that is wrapped up in stocks and stuff that would need to be liquidated. But hey, it's still just sitting there unused, untouched. So what is the purpose of him having all of it other than to be able to claim he's the richest of the rich? Not much purpose I'd say.
Now for a logic game...
How many houses does Bill Gates own? I have no clue and I'm sure if I tried to find out I'd be arrested by the FBI. So I will assume he has one house in each state. In a way, it makes sense. There are business interests all over this country for Microsoft. So perhaps he has one residence in each state. And let's further assume he has, on average, 3 vehicles at each house. One for him. One for the wifey. And perhaps one family car, or an emergency car, or a business car. Ok...we have Bill Gates, $59 billion dollars, 50 owned homes, 150 cars.
Not bad. Probably a way high assumption as reality is probably more like 10 homes and 30 cars, but like Mr Gates, we're shooting high!
Great. I'm gonna take those beautiful 59 billion bucks and start giving them out in $1 million chunks to families. How many families can I give that money to??
Answer: 59,000 families!!
59,000 families who live in apartments, might drive an older car, who are struggling because they have nothing worth any true capital. Afterall, to get a loan, you have to have something to put up against it. When you have nothing...well nothing is what you get. Very little chance of improvement.
However, using that lovely unused money, 59,000 families are instant millionaires! And the money is given to them. This isn't lent money. It's not borrowed. It is a gift. Afterall, we don't want to put all these families further into debt! That would completely defeat the purpose of doing this!!
What happens now??
Quite simply, 59,000 families pay off their debts, move out of their apartments, buy homes, trade in their junkers, buy new(er) cars. And the best thing about all of this: they can afford it! I mean, yeah, they could turn stupid and buy a $650,000 home and 5 BMWs along with 3 Cadillac SUVS. That kind of moronic spending is inevitable in some instances. But, hopefully, for the most part, people will buy what they know they can afford and maintain...as well as what they need (as opposed to want!)
Now lets summarize:
Bill Gates - 50 homes, 150 cars.
My plan - 59,000 homes, 177,000 cars.
And that is just with Bill Gates' money! I haven't even touched Warren Buffet's 52 b...bbb...billion dollars yet! And yes, that's another 52,000 families that would be helped.
So with tapping only two people's wealth, I have helped 111,000 families!!! That is 111,000 homes bought, 333,000 cars bought, hundreds of thousands of appliances, tvs, dvds, pieces of furniture bought. And it's bought with money that is JUST SITTING THERE UNUSED!!!!
What else does this do? This has jump started the economy by giving people real wealth to play with in a way that Karl Rove and Sean Hannity only wish could happen under Republican Rule.
Now start throwing in the rest of the Forbes top 400 wealthiest Americans. All of a sudden, the wealth of 400 people translates into a real existence for over a million families!
Know what else this does? This gives families the ability to send their children to college. No debt incurred. College money is there for the taking. And not just crappy community colleges. The children can go to good schools, get good educations, obtain a good degree, which will help them get a good paying job...so that their family can live a better life as well!
I've not only helped this generation, I'm helping the next one...and the one after that.
Know what else, I just help the hell out of the American marriage! Think of all the marriages that go down the drain because of constant financial problems? That would be a thing of the past. Instead of worrying about not having enough money, parents will have to worry about how to best use their chunk of high life! So all you Republicans out there who cry about the degeneration of the American family and family values, go shove that in your pipe!
And all of this happens because of sharing of wealth...SOCIALISM!
